What are common questions about Illuminance Converter?

Is the Illuminance Converter tool completely free?

Yes, our Illuminance Converter is 100% free to use online. There are no costs, subscriptions, or limitations on the number of illuminance conversions you can perform.

What is illuminance and how is it different from lumens?

Illuminance is a measure of how much luminous flux (light, measured in lumens) falls on a given area. It quantifies the brightness of a surface being illuminated. Lumens, on the other hand, measure the total amount of visible light emitted by a light source. Illuminance depends on the light source's lumens and the distance/angle to the surface.

What illuminance units are supported by this converter?

Our tool primarily supports conversions between Lux (lx) and Foot-Candles (fc). These are the most common units for measuring illuminance.

How do I convert foot-candles to lux?

To convert Foot-Candles (fc) to Lux (lx), select 'Foot-Candles' as your 'Convert From' unit and 'Lux' as your 'Convert To' unit. Enter the value in Foot-Candles, and the converter will instantly show you the equivalent in Lux. (Approximately 1 Lux = 0.0929 Foot-Candles).

How do I convert lux to foot-candles?

To convert Lux (lx) to Foot-Candles (fc), select 'Lux' as your 'Convert From' unit and 'Foot-Candles' as your 'Convert To' unit. Enter the value in Lux, and the converter will instantly show you the equivalent in Foot-Candles. (Approximately 1 Foot-Candle = 10.764 Lux).

How accurate is the Illuminance Converter for professional use?

Our online Illuminance Converter uses precise, standard mathematical conversion factors based on the definition of Lux and Foot-Candles, ensuring high accuracy suitable for lighting design, photography, architectural planning, and other technical applications.

The Lux (lx) and Foot-Candle (fc) Units Explained

The two primary units for illuminance are the Lux (lx) and the Foot-Candle (fc). Lux is the standard SI derived unit, defined as one lumen per square meter (lm/m²). The Foot-Candle is the imperial and US customary unit, defined as one lumen per square foot (lm/ft²). Since one square meter is larger than one square foot, a given amount of light spread over a square meter results in lower illuminance (fewer lux) than the same light spread over a square foot (more foot-candles). This is why 1 Foot-Candle is approximately 10.76 Lux.

Typical Illuminance Levels (Examples)

To get a feel for the units: Bright sunlight can be 100,000 Lux (approx. 10,000 fc). A well-lit office might require 500 Lux (approx. 50 fc). A dimly lit corridor might be 50 Lux (approx. 5 fc). Moonlight is very low, around 0.1 Lux (approx. 0.01 fc). Our converter helps you translate these values between units easily.

Relation to Lumens and the Area of the Surface

Illuminance is directly related to the luminous flux (lumens) emitted by a light source and the area over which that light is spread. Illuminance = Luminous Flux / Area. Lux uses square meters for the area, while Foot-Candles use square feet. Understanding this relationship helps in calculating the required lumen output of fixtures based on desired illuminance levels and the space size, and converting between Lux and Foot-Candles based on the area conversion.

What is Illuminance?

Illuminance is a photometric quantity that measures the total luminous flux (amount of light) incident on a surface per unit area. It essentially tells you how brightly a surface is lit, regardless of how much light is reflected or emitted by the surface itself (that's luminance). Illuminance is a key factor in designing lighting systems for various environments.

Applications in Lighting Design, Photography, and Horticulture

Our Illuminance Converter is highly applicable. Lighting designers use it to plan interior and exterior lighting for homes, offices, roads, and public spaces. Photographers and videographers use it to measure scene brightness and set camera exposure. Horticulturalists use it to measure the light available for plants indoors or outdoors, often using specialized PAR (Photosynthetically Active Radiation) meters but still sometimes needing conversions to standard illuminance units for comparison or planning.

Why Accurate Illuminance Conversion is Important

Accurate illuminance conversion is critical in many fields. Lighting designers and architects need to convert between Lux and Foot-Candles depending on regional standards or client requirements. Photographers and cinematographers convert light meter readings. Safety regulations for workplaces often specify minimum illuminance levels, which may be provided in different units. Horticulturalists need to convert light levels for optimal plant growth. Precision ensures designs meet standards and equipment is used correctly.
